A cacerolazo is one of Latin America's most iconic forms of protest. It starts by grabbing the first pot you can find in your kitchen, stepping onto your balcony or opening your window, and banging it as loudly as possible with a wooden spoon, a simple yet powerful act of peaceful resistance. I've always been fascinated by how such an ordinary gesture can carry so much meaning.
In 2021, Colombia went through one of the most turbulent political moments in its recent history. Frustration, disappointment, and anger spilled into the streets during what became known as the “Estallido Social”. The government's response was widely criticized, as the demonstrations were marked by deaths, allegations of police brutality, and other abuses of authority.
I created a fictional cookware brand called Sartenes La Resistencia (The Resistance Pans) with a single purpose: to raise money for protesters who needed financial support for medical treatment or legal defense.
Each pan featured the face of the sitting president printed on its underside, the very side that received every strike during a cacerolazo. With every hit, the image slowly faded away. Surrounding the portrait were some of the government's most controversial statements and decisions, turning every act of protest into a physical erasure of political power while helping fund those affected by the demonstrations.
